About
As Lunar Gala celebrates its 20th anniversary, we reflect back on the organization’s continuous evolution since its conception, the humble beginnings from which it has grown into the fully immersive experience it is today. In a thematic embodiment of our adaptive growth, we present Lunar Gala 2016: strain.
Strain \’strān\ — The evolution of a form over time from the application of external forces – pressure, tension, and constriction, in order for an organism to survive. Through the past twenty years of growth, Lunar Gala has strained to evolve beyond the usual, and will continue to do so for years to come.
Lunar Gala is a student-run organization at Carnegie Mellon University invested in cultivating inter-disciplinary creative talent within the community. Every February, student designers, models, dancers, videographers, motion designers, technicians and a creative team bring their skills together to produce a fashion show. For a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the show's production, check out this year's Instagram, browse the Lunar Gala blog, follow us on Facebook, or contact us via email.

-
Abraxas Melissa Zucker + Catherine Zheng + Shanna Chan
Abraxas
Abraxas is an exploration of the classic female silhouette through abstract mathematical concepts. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of mathematical modeling software and geometric tessellation, this line integrates modular systems into flowing, natural forms.
-
The Barracks Linny Tan
The Barracks
The Barracks: a series of military style lingerie that investigates the clash of the hyper masculine and feminine in a quest for androgyny. It blends qualities of aggressive defense and flirtatious disclosure to construct ambiguity and fluidity in gender representation, examining the role of androgyny in a field driven by overt sexualization.
-
Corpus Rachel Chang + Christine Shen
Corpus
Corpus explores the conflict between vulnerability and protection in human relationships. Vulnerability is an openness, a susceptibility to hurt but is also what allows us to connect and empathize with each other. Protection can be a display of power through sheer size, force, and volume, or a desire to slip into the background, present but quiet and moderate. Our line represents this paradox with revealing and concealing forms and familiar yet alien materials.
-
Crest Sophie Parrinello
Crest
Crest is inspired by seventies' fashion and traditional Japanese shibori indigo dying. The flowing shapes of the garments and the organic patterns of the dyed fabric play on each other to create a free spirited and easy going collection of designs.
-
Cymatic Anna Gusman + Ariana Nathani
Cymatic
"Cymatics: wave phenomena, vibrational effects and harmonic oscillations with their structure, kinetics and dynamics.”—Hans Jenny. Utilizing the intricate visual symmetry derived from the vibration of matter, this line is an exploration of the way sound interacts with its environment on a molecular level. Our line borrows aesthetics from audio jpeg files, sine waves, and other visuals associated with sound and is coupled with digital fabrication to create Cymatic.
-
Dauntless Eunice Oh + Katherine Wang + Yiru Yao
Dauntless
Dauntless incorporates elements that highlight the elegance of a woman and the fierce nature of a warrior. Delicate floral accents with the harshness of the structured armor create a conflicting but synergetic mix of femininity and toughness.
-
Decay Michelle Li
Decay
The Moon changes in 8 distinct phases and the process of decay can also happens in 8 distinct phases. Decomposers like earthworms, fungi, bacteria, and beetles are all part of the decomposing process of organic material. The evolution of decomposition is also reflected in the phases of the moon-the full moon representing living organisms and the new moon representing the bare bones of the finished result. Drawing inspiration from the earthy color palette and the organic forms found in nature, this line narrates this course of action and everything inbetween.
-
Erode Zai Aliyu + Kate Werth + Jonathan Lopez
Erode
Erode is a collection that explores continually changing and evolving landscapes and environments through the use of black, white, and an organically manipulated grid structure, highlighting the juxtaposition between structure and fluidity, as rigid structured elements break down and transition into flexible and fluid features. Our line reflects the meaning of creeping normality and erosion; the subtle and gradual change that occurs over time to the point where it’s in complete opposition of the source, and yet doesn’t fully contradict, but subtly compliments.
-
Exuviae Noopur Suckhlecha + Jenny Wong + Marnfah Kanjanavanit
Exuviae
Exuviae are the empty exoskeleton remnants of certain animals after a skin-shedding process. In Latin, the term exuviae means "that which is stripped from a body." The line "exuviae" attempts to redefine this natural phenomenon on the human body.
-
Filigree Noa Fineout
Filigree
Inspired by the victorian era, Filigree is a modern exploration of the restrictive, yet extravagant, nature of antique garments. Progressing from lavish fabrics and fagile details indicative of the era, the line turns on itself, unclothing the opulent exterior to reveal bare scaffolding of the garments. The stark nakedness of the resulting forms reveals a silent pure beauty.
-
Fukkatsu Cindy Hsu + Sharon Yu
Fukkatsu
FUKKATSU means revival in Japanese. In this line we've incorporated traditional Japanese wearables' elements into modern inspired pieces. The recurring element of the Koi fish and other patterns allude to an icon of traditional Japanese culture.
-
Impèratrice Angela Liang + Shannon Lin + Hilary Lai
Impèratrice
Impèratrice is inspired by the only woman to ever rule China: Wu Zetian. As a girl, Wu was charming, witty, and beautiful, but as the opportunity to rise to power arose, she also showed a ruthless side of ambition. Determined single-mindedness was what brought her success, but Wu ruled fairly and wisely, using her values to help elevate the status of women. Wu's story is one of growing up and female empowerment, a tale we hope to translate in our line—from the playful looks at the beginning that transition to large, dynamic gowns at the end. .
-
Polymorphism Richard Chou + ChengCheng Zhao
Polymorphism
Polymorphism: the occurrence of differing underlying forms in the same population of species. Every aspect of our lives is encoded in data. Tectonics of human-environment relationship shifted dramatically through technology, as our growing reliance fades the line between virtual and real. The polymorphic nature of data is void of, yet defines, humanity. Inspired by the rationale and beauty of data visualization, Polymorphism explores the intricate relationship between humanity and encoded information. Each piece represents a sculptural form of data; physicalized into wearable artifacts. Placed once again onto human models, the line juxtaposes the invisible and the visible, the inseparable and the separable.
-
Pom Emily Mongilio + Lily Fulop
Pom
Pom is a crochet lingerie line inspired by the seventies and bondage. Crochet is colorful, soft, and fun, while the styles we’re referencing are dark, risqué, and provocative. Through this contrast, our designs are meant to be playful and suggestive and to push the boundaries of what lingerie can be.
-
Sanctum Sasha Kerbel + Madalyn Gryger
Sanctum
Our line, Sanctum, explores the experience of living with mental illness. Sanctum is a place to feel safe. We explore the idea of safety in relation to mental illness by recreating boundaries in which people with mental illnesses live in the form of fashion. By using different materials, forms and transparencies, we create variations of boundaries between the model and the audience, thus mimicking the mental boundaries that living with a mental illness can create.
-
xoAix Becky Liu
xoAix
xoAix is the journey of one's imagination in a new city. This daydream is inspired by the romantic colors of the south of France. When we wake up, we should look at the world with the eyes of a child. Wonder about everything and worry about nothing. We spend so much time caught up in the meaning of things that we forget to even look at what these things are. The world really is a beautiful place, despite everything. It just takes opening our eyes to fall in love with it.

Abraxas is an exploration of the classic female silhouette through abstract mathematical concepts. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of mathematical modeling software and geometric tessellation, this line integrates modular systems into flowing, natural forms. Meet the designers behind the line: Catherine Zheng, Melissa Zucker and Shanna Chan.
(Left: Melissa, Middle: Shanna, Right: Catherine)
Catherine, one of the talented designers of Abraxas, is a junior studying Communication Design and Global Systems & Management while pursuing minors in Chinese Studies and Human Computer Interaction. She is also a sister of Kappa Alpha Theta and is involved with Design League. The New Jersey native has been on the Lunar Gala Executive board for the past 2 years is currently our Marketing Coordinator. Being a designer caught Catherine’s eye because of the creativity, dedication and large scale professionalism that Lunar Gala exemplifies, both as a student run organization and as an artistic showcase. From 2 years of being involved with the organization, Catherine truly believes that Lunar Gala shows the Carnegie Mellon community that passion, creativity and hard work can result in something spectacular.
As a junior studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Industrial Design, Melissa chose to design for Lunar Gala because it was a unique opportunity to do something outside of the strict mechanical engineering curriculum. “It’s been an incredible challenge balancing academic studies with a project of this scale, but ultimately our team’s passion for what we’re creating is what continues to drive us to do more,” Melissa says. Aside from Lunar Gala, the designer keeps herself busy as a sister of Delta Gamma and as a teaching assistant for the Mechanical Engineering Department. This is the San Diego native’s first time being involved with Lunar Gala and is eager to see everything- from the endless planning, designing and training- come together. As a whole, Lunar Gala is impressive to Melissa because it is entirely student run. “I think the fact that students from vastly different concentrations can come together and make something like this shows the virtuosity of our community.”
Last but not least! 5th year Architecture major and a brother of Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, Shanna is also a 2 year LG veteran. She previously designed for the Red Bull competition line in Lunar Gala Hypnose and is excited to have the opportunity to design one last time in her final year at Carnegie Mellon. “LG is an amazing, and most definitely the biggest, student- run event that ever happens at CMU. It would’ve been one of my biggest regrets if I graduated without ever designing and making a line.” Being involved with Lunar Gala has taught her that anything is possible if you set your heart to it. Shanna is most excited for finally unveiling months of hard work to everyone attending the show.
The show is TOMORROW! Be sure to come and check out this amazing line. See you there!
